This hoax made an appearance on my Facebook wall a few months back and it angers me every time it reappears – I hate to think how many people have chosen this over life-saving treatments for cancer. It angers me thinking about the harm this hoax has caused.
For readers of mine who don’t know, Graviola (also known as Soursop) is a fruit that grows in South America, parts of Africa and Southeast Asia. It’s also been linked to a rise in atypical Parkinson’s disease among natives that eat the fruit in high doses due to containing a very high concentration of annonacin. According to CancerResearchUK “Laboratory research has found that some substances in Graviola cause nerve damage and that these substances can cross into the brain from the bloodstream”.
Just to be clear: Atypical Parkinson’s is not the same as degenerative genetic Parkinson’s. Atypical Parkinson’s is also known as drug-induced Parkinson’s and as mentioned before, the fruit is known to have very high concentration of annonacin which is known to be a cause of nerve damage.
Soursop does have certain health benefits, namely its anti-parasitic, anti-microbial and anti-depressive properties, and a study has shown it may have potential as a chemotherapeutical – largely in part the active components of the tree. However just because it has these properties doesn’t mean eating the fruit itself will cause those properties to fight cancer.

This is a misleading statement – a 1996 study found that a compound isolated and extracted from the seeds of Annona muricata (Soursop) had potency higher than that of the chemotherapy drug adriamycin on colon adenocarcinoma cells. Those results were only for one type of chemotherapy drug being used to treat one type of cancer. The cancer patient would need to eat the seeds as opposed to the actual fruit itself to receive the Annona muricata compound. Further to that, even if the seeds have cancer-killing properties for even one type of cancer – we have no dosage information. There have never been human trials into the effectiveness of this compound on other types of cancer, let alone humans with cancer. Without human testing and the creation of a safe effective dose regulated drug – people consuming the seeds of the fruit open themselves up to potential toxic side effects, Parkinson’s or worse based on no evidence.
There are in vitro trials being conducted on the viability of being able to harness the extract of the fruit that shows potential in fighting cancer cells however it isn’t as simple as “eat the fruit and your cancer will go away”. In vitro meaning laboratory testing – not human trials. We’re a long way off from human trials – we first need to understand how the seed compound works, whether there are any side effects or potential to harm people and whether it actually can fight cancer or eradicate it altogether, let alone whether it works on humans or what dosages to give them. We also need to take into consideration the fact what happens to cells in a petri dish can be very different to what happens to cells in the body, especially in an environment with thousands of other compounds which are either naturally produced or introduced via eating or drinking. We still have no idea how this compound would react on cancer within the body.
I call this a hoax because the statements made above accompanied by the photo are incredibly misleading – with further research down the line we may be able to extract and harness the compound that has the potential to fight cancer cells and we may be able to create a drug from that extraction that can help in eliminating cancers but cancer patients aren’t going to be cured by eating the fruit. Currently, we have no cure for the various types of cancer. To all the people who email me asking whether this fruit will help with their cancer or their friend’s cancer – we need further research to make it safe. We need human trials to ascertain any side effects so people don’t die or get Parkinson’s. We need further research to extract the active ingredient to ascertain whether or not it can fight cancer cells. Cancer is terrifying and there are many charlatans out there who offer miracle cures for money who prey on vulnerable people – please talk to your oncologist before wasting your money and time on hoaxes and scams designed to drain your wallet.
The Soursop Facebook status is another misleading statement dressed up as a cure to give people false hope and steer them away from medical treatment.

OK, So your telling us that the people that did the recent study at Purdue University don’t know what there talking about? You say this is all just a hoax? I bet they will like to hear that they spent all that money and time for nothing. I will see that they get a copy of this sense I live next door to Purdue University…

The statement is fairly clear. While Soursop has proprieties that have the potential to kill cancer cells – this is not going to be achieved by eating the food directly. In fact, as stated above, eating too much of the food has the potential to lead to some nasty side effects. More research is needed to extract the active ingredients responsible for killing the cancer cells so we can harass it and synthesise it into a medication.
I guess people who do not want to read the WHOLE truth just won’t…As many people have said it, whenever you read that a substance kills cancer cells in vitro, remember so will a handgun

And what about the patients whose cancer is Not responding to chemo or radiation

As for what I would say to people whose cancer isn’t responding to chemo – there is no evidence to support that this method will impact in anyway apart from negative towards your quality of life. There is no evidence to suggest that the seeds of this fruit will actually do anything for you. If you eat the seeds of this fruit, it will not be for scientific reasons but for faith based reasons and faith has never had a place in science.

I know, because I have used, not only graviola, but many other natural remedies to cure my own cancer. Had I gone to a medical establishment murderer, I would be DEAD.

Graviola is known to cause the death of brain cells, as well as muscle disorders (similar parkinsons) as well as make people with parkinsons have pronounced symptoms. I suggest that you stop using it in whatever way you chose to use it. It doesn’t seem like you have many cells to spare.
By the way those medical murderers as you call them bring millions of lives into this world through sound medical practice and save millions more with live saving medical discoveries.
Where does she get her statistics? Chemo and radio therapy help people prolong their lives and in some instances cure cancer (not all of course). Anyway, there is no proof that any food item will cure cancer, the only dietary intervention to prevent some times of cancer is maintaining a healthy weight.
How can you trust studies that have an agenda to push? So we have a group of people with parkinson’s disease and some said they ate sour sop. There’s the link. Speaking of studies, the University of Edmonton cured multiple types of cancer with their treatment. Then not one pharmaceutical companies would use the treatment purely because there is no money in a cure. This is not a conspiracy. It was all over the news in Alberta. Do not think for one second that these companies will not bullshit you to keep the cash coming in. Their studies are pushed with an agenda and if they cannot spin it to fit their agenda, you will never hear about it.
Why is it that people who spew forth the “pharmaceutical companies only make drugs if it gives them money” AKA “Big Pharma keeps us sick for profit” conspiracy theory forget that alternative medicine brings in billions of dollars per year and spends none of it on research to prove that its products are safe or effective. The role of medical research is to create safe and effective medications which take years of research, four phases of clinical trials and 100 of hours of time and effort to pass the regulations for usage.
Alternative medicine on the another hand will sell you tap water and call it treatment.

Please make sure she makes an appointment with her oncologist and talk to them about the appropriate medical treatment. There is no scientific evidence to suggest supplements will have any effect on any cancer.
It’s not a supplement . It’s a fruit. And seeds. And teas. It’s ice cream and juice and picked off a tree. It’s food. That nature provides. It’s not made in a shop or sold at gnc. People eat it every day. According to the cancer center…. it’s More dangerous then chemo… so maybe you should call the cancer center a hoax. Cause they obviously are avoiding testing.on a very promising finding.
It’s a shame that people can read the same post that you and i just read and not ask themselves. ….. if people are dying with cancer and they testing all kind of treatment and drugs that can kill you….then why not test this plant …. there are people who are willing to test it for free. People who choose to take it and will give them the results. They already know it works better then chemo. And we know the side effects of chemo. So I’d say …drink a shake everyday. . Swallow the seeds . And see how that goes before the horrid chemo and radiation. Don’t listen to the man who posted this and acted like he diddn’t see the in consistency of the big drug companies. Time to share information and be open-minded for everything that sounds even half hopeful as it is… It is easy to talk every approach down and block research unless you are your loved-ones are affected…
That is the most ignorant thing I have heard. Seriously? My grandfather suffered with Parkinson’s before he died and it is anything but a picnic. Also, my father had bladder cancer and my aunt had breast cancer. Both were cured by modern medicine, not some unproven natural “remedy”. Neither of them would choose cancer over the minor inconvenience that treatment may cause. Neither was about to put their faith in something that has not been properly tested or proven to work. I know I sure wouldn’t. I am not saying that there will never be a natural alternative, but none have been proven to be effective as of yet so this shouldn’t be pushed on others as a definite and it is irresponsible and cruel to get people to not get treatment when they might die.

If there is ever going to be a cure for cancer – it won’t be because someone ate a plant. It will be because we will have synthesised the active ingredients into a safer more effective medication that has been rigorously tested and proven to work. My condolences for the loss of your grandfather. Some of the active ingredients in Soursop do have promise but not by eating the fruit directly and we are a way off from turning them into a viable treatment. Alternative Medicine like the article written about the Soursop fruit that I’ve debunked preys on vulnerable people (generally for profit) who just want to be healthy and it angers me that people would take advantage of sick people.
Well, maybe this fruit is a hoax but not all natural remedies must be.. Right? For example raw turmeric.. We use the roots to make turmeric powder and it is effective in many skin ailments.. Today we know that using salt for teeth cleaning makes it whiter and also we have beetle leaves that are useful for helping when we have common cold by reducing a runny nose!
3 years ago when I was breast feeling my child, informed a huge lump due to milk in my breast and every doc I besides said they will cut open and let it ooze and then stitch me up! My mother in law suggested an alternative … Mix a pinch of turmeric with salt, sour buttermilk and some mud and mix it on a normal clean muddy floor repeating application after every time it dried off ( yucky I throught as well.. )the lump first showed up like a small boil on skin and within 3 days it stopped hurtin and I was fine !! No cuts , no wounds and best thing is I was able to continue feeding throughout ) ensuring I clean up before I used to feed my baby! So maybe some are hoaxes but not all my friend not all

My wife was diagnose with ovarian cancer 18 months ago. She went through surgery & 6 cycles of chemo. As supplement treatments I gave her soursop (graviola) and cassava morning and evening. No side effects were experienced. In addition she took B17 tablets. She is in remission now. I do not believe Parkinson and soursop connection. I recommend taking soursop, cassava & B17 with chemo for better result in fighting with cancer. One of our friend followed the same and had good results.

Why skeptics always use “anecdotal” and not “testimonial” , or something similar ? The moment someone is transferring some testimonial it becomes “anecdotal” … The only truly believable testimonial is the one heard or seen with it’s own eyes (and/or ears). That means that 99.9% of testimonials found on internet are actually “anecdotes” ?
It’s interesting how some skeptics (to be clear, I’m skeptic, too, that’s why I’m here…) like to use “anecdote” instead of “testimonial” … Those two words are showing the matter in two very different lights .
And, also, 99.9% of “scientific evidences” found on internet can be called anecdotes, also … Ppl referring to scientific evidences are also transferring information they have read somewhere, and just because somewhere in credentials (or elsewhere) is written that the source is “prominent and well know” scientist of institution, it’s a “scientific evidence”.
Or even better – “it’s not scientifically proven” … If something (cure, whatever) is “not scientifically proven”, it doesn’t mean it is not effective.
Just a few thoughts …
A testimonial is an account of what your beliefs and values are typically based on faith whereas an anecdote is an account of anything that has occurred whether it is accurate or not. Regardless of the name – anecdotes and testimonials are not evidence.
When you rely scientific evidence to an audience you need to cite and source your references. This is university writing 101. Generally by linking to the article you have sourced the information from so the information does not become second hand.

You mean the placebo effect? There is a large difference between feeling better and actually being better. A placebo gives you the feeling of being better but it doesn’t mean any physiological changes have occured that has made a difference to your condition.
I think you maybe missed my point (maybe because I’m not native english speaker, so …).
I’m saying that “anecdote” is like story telling, amusing vignette, or similar. It’s light, superficial it doesn’t have same “weight” as “testimonial”. Testimonials are like – “the witness thing” – it has more “weight” then anecdote.
And, no, I don’t mean placebo. I’m saying – scientific evidence is not the ultimate evidence – the “word of god”, or something. It’s just, in other words – “based on our current knowledge, and on findings we are able to find, we are concluding this and that”. Scientific method are constantly changing, updating and what was yesterday a proof, today it isn’t.
If something is working, it’s not just because it just “feels better”, but it’s because it IS working. If someone is alive and not sick, instead of being dead, then it means – IT’S WORKING. As simple as that …
Chemo and other Cancer treatments through the medical field is not good for the human body. I have Cancer and I have stopped all treatments because it was killing me. I also am a born again Christian and believe in miracles. God has already healed me of SLE Lupus and has brought my Cancer back to stage 1b without cancer treatment. I am using the soursop tea with bignay simply to be healthier and chemical treatment free. People need to research their options and decide what treatment route is best for themselves. Just because someone chooses an alternative route, does not make them stupid or silly. Not everyone wants to live on chemo!
I truly hope you throw this mentality out the window. Religious faith aside the only good results seen in cancer patients are caused by properly treating with chemotherapy and radiation. The alternative is death for certain. If there is a god, gods, higher power (I can only say for me it doesn’t matter) there is no evidence in the miraces you hope for, there is evidence in science. If God created us in his/her image, it created us to use reason and logic and therefore science and medicine are tools bestowed upon us. Don’t throw your life away ignoring the gifts of our time, the advancements and understanding we have gathered can save your life. I know it is unpleasant, i know this first hand, but survival is worth all of the hardship. I know that first hand as well.
I to know first hand, having stage 4 colon, liver, lung and now bone cancer. 105 chemo treatments and starting radiation next week for the bones. But you know chemo cures NOTHING it is a management tool. Eventually the cancer breaks thru.

Well said Tammy, faith has a big influence on your treatment, and many of these natural treatments have been around for hundreds of years before conventional treatments, I know that medical research has come a long way from where it was 30 years ago but there should be more research into a lot of these natural products that are obviously healing many people.
I can remember herbal products taken off the market because they were too effective for the medical field, they classed them as dangerous because they have not been tested.
My choice was to take both options to help my situation, with a lot of prayers from a lot of friends, if the good Lord wants me to live I will beat it.

Instead of saying there are no human studies, EVERYONE should be saying we urgently need human studies and the gov. should be making them happen ASASP, because big pharma is only interested in patent profits, not life.
“Big pharma” is earning more by keeping people sick then by healing them. Once someone is healed, there’s no need to buy drugs no more, that is, no profits from drugs. There’s more money in killing people then in helping them (one of the most profitable business is war).

Off course, not all and everybody in pharma business is evil, there are many of them actually trying to help and heal (there are many drugs and therapies that actually heal), but the greed and corruption (generally speaking) is just too strong to make those good people (ethical scientists) really matter in larger scale.
So whose to say the info refuting the ad has not been altered as well. After all, we all know that pharmaceutical companies have lied and of course the ACS wouldn’t want that info out there. After all, there’s too much money to lose from chemotherapy treatment IF the story about Graviola is true.
Everytime there is PROOF that there is a CURE for a disease that they say isn’t…some liars in some phantom “study” say it is a HOAX. USE YOUR COMMON SENSE and go all NATURAL!! I’ve survived testicular cancer thanks to chemotherapy, I was cancer free for 3 years. Unfortunately I had a different and very rare cancer within the testicle which is never found in those cases. They kept a close eye on me, and now they have found the rare cancer type managed to affect a lymph node just outside of the surgical area that they removed affected nodes from in my body.
Because of the doctors who watch me diligently, and because of chemotherapy, my odds of being cured and surviving are considerably higher than they would be without these factors. Cancer is complex, it is difficult to manage, and it is not treatable with the same drugs for every type. Scientists and doctors have worked hard for the past century trying to find a cure, or to better prevent future occurrences in people who are cured or in remission.
People always think there’s some conspiracy about it, like we don’t have a cure or any viable treatments because it doesn’t make money. I am disappointed in those who fall for this idea because we have cures, we have viable treatments. They suck to go through no doubt, but they save lives using chemotherapy and prevent future disease in many patients every year. You clamour for a cure and deny the ones available to us because you don’t like them.
I’m about to undergo treatment again, of course I’m not looking forward to it, but I am looking forward to a chance at being cured and surviving.
Its easy to say you would never use chemotherapy or radiation treatments, but I implore you, if you ever are given the choice between these “natural” magic remedies and traditional medicine, do yourself and your loved ones a favor by staying away from the snake oil (cannabis oil even). You won’t like it, but you’ll have a higher chance at surviving to bitch about how it sucked.

Let me first say that you people are kidding yourselves if you think ‘traditional treatments’ are any good. For 50+ years the medical industry has struggled with cancer. Reality is that chemo and radiation are extremely carcinogenic, take it from me i was a healthy guy that had some anxiety and doctors decided to ct scan me. Anyway long story short it ended up being a botched imaging exam in which i recieved a very high dose of radiation. Now i have cancer from it, okay hard to prove you say? I have been monitoring my condition ever since i had the ct with mri which is actually safe, based on my own research. I can tell you radiation is evil and chemo well thats proven poison that damages your heart, brain and lungs, all of your major organs. It defies logic that someone would put themselves through that! So the medical insldustry has to start getting with the program, natural remedeys do work and are so gentle on the body, i am proof i have completely changed my life. i was in a bad place and didnt think id make it, i still have a long way to go. I believe in science and im very logical, and previously had much faith in the medical system. After my botched experience unfortunately i have none now. And synthetic drugs well i never really liked them since they nearly killed my kid. Back to the point, billions of dollars spent and the best the medical industry can come up with is radiation and chemo!!!!!!! You must be kidding me when we have all of these smart phones and tvs on the wall and smart cars and, well the list goes on. You and your chrony medical people are nothing but money hungry theives, when was the last time you went to a specialist? Huh? Costs over 200 dollars and your in there for 2 mins and he prescribes synthetic drugs that cause a crapload of side effects… Which by the way cant be accurately described by your doctor!! Doctors need to be innovative, like software developers, car manufacturers, even the govt!! Five years ago on July 8th, 2010 I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to my liver and lungs. Last year it matasticized to my bones down my spine and in my ribs. I have had 105 chemo treatments to date and starting radiation next week. Chemo CURES NOTHING. It only manages the cancer, eventually the cancer breaks thru and the drug is no longer effective. If there is a natural remedy taken in moderation what do I really have to lose. I am here 5 years longer than my doctors thought I would be.
